Why More Parents Are Donating Umbilical Cord Blood?

With passing of time, it is being seen that numerous parents are donating umbilical cord blood. It is their greatness and understanding of how much essential this is, which leads to such decisions. However, those that are not aware of it should donate it to public or private banks according to their choice. Let’s have a look at why people donate it these days!

Using for transplant purposes

The first thing which one should know is that cord blood contains hematopoietic cells which can be turned into any type of blood cell. Therefore, it can be used for various transplants which help in curing diseases like immune deficiency, blood disorders, metabolic diseases, certain cancer types, and more.

However, with continuous research it has come to light that it can be useful in saving lives in various other ways too. It is quite precious and worth keeping if someone doesn’t want to donate right away. Also, it is safe for babies as well as doesn’t affect delivery or labor.

Treating uncommon diseases

Most diseases which cord blood is used for treating is not common. Hence, chances of any child getting it are quite low. However, millions of children are affected globally. Hence, more people use public blood banks frequently than private ones for banking cord blood.

If any family suffers from genetic problems that might result in developing a severe illness which can be treated with such cord blood, only then it makes sense for that family to keep it for themselves. However, if that is not the case then donating them to public blood bank makes more sense as the chance of it required by a different family is higher than that baby’s family.

Doesn’t require any payment

Donating cord blood doesn’t require a family to pay any money to the public banks. Moreover, storing it at a private blood bank would cost hundreds of dollars each year. Also, many private banks doesn’t hold accreditation standards like the public banks which simply means that cord blood stored privately can become less useful.

These are some of the reasons as to why more people are donating it than opting for storage. However, everyone should opt for cord blood storage if it is required by them to overcome any disorder or disease.
