Cord blood stem cells have been used a range of different diseases such as blood disorder, some cancers, as well as immune deficiencies. Among these are aplastic anemia, leukemia, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and Hodgkin’s disease. In addition, cord blood transplants are accepted as a treatment for sickle cell anemia and thalassemia, inherited blood disorders that affected some ethnic groups.

Treating elderly people

Scientists argue that adult cancer patients may soon benefit from their own cord blood stem cells that were extracted at birth. Researchers hope that the stem cells will become viable in treating cancers that are not genetically based. Also, most of the stem cells in adults extracted from bone marrow may soon use stem cells from cord blood storage.

Type 1 diabetes

Infants and young children in the US are also being injected with their own cord blood stem cells in clinical tests to initiate therapies for hydrocephalus, traumatic brain injury, oxygen deprivation at birth, congenital heart conditions that need surgery. If the clinical tests are successful, therapies will become common in the next few years.

Autism and cerebral palsy

Kids in clinical tests are treated with their cord blood for cerebral palsy, which is a medical condition that attacks at least one out of 300 kids in America alone. In addition, children in these trials are treated with their own cord for autism, which is a serious, condition affecting 1 out of 70 children. According to a report published in 2017, it showed that children that showed autism symptoms had improved significantly in the first six months of treatment.

Studying animals

Researchers at the University Of South Florida Venter Of Excellence found that the stem cells treated rats with spinal cord injuries and stroke. Those with injuries healed quite faster and their body functions restored. In addition, the center is now researching on treatments for diseases such as cerebral palsy and Alzheimer’s as well.
